Horizon T101 Treadmill Review

>> Basic, Fantastic Treadmill, By Susan Wells "SW" <<

I bought this treadmill, the Horizon T101, around 2 months ago for me and my family to use. The instructions were intuitive and relatively easy to follow--set-up did require two people but went quickly. The treadmill runs smoothly, and has a long and wide belt that is more than enough for everyone to jog on without worry (our family ranges from 5' to 6' tall). We all prefer to control the speed and incline manually; so the lack of custom workout programs wasn't a factor for us, but might be for some. It has buttons for each incline 1% to 10% and for each speed 1mph to 10mph, in addition to arrow buttons that adjust the incline by 0.5 and the mph by 0.1 mph. The arms are well positioned and can be used to ease the impact on your back. The heart-rate monitor seems accurate, but you have to step off the belt and onto the side rails to get a good reading. The speakers and fan are okay, but nothing great. The readout is basic but well laid out.

If you are looking for a no-nonsense treadmill that will get the job done, the T101 seems well made and worth a little bit more than the cheaper "entry-level" treadmills. We have all used it daily and have all enjoyed it thoroughly.

Decision to buy
Horizon T101 ConsoleThe Horizon T101 is my first treadmill purchase and I do not know much about treadmills except using them at YMCA. Like most of my major purchases, I checked the [...]for treadmill rating and this model was one of the models with a best buy rating. I also checked online reviews by people who have purchased the product before I made my final decision to buy.

After checking the online reviews, I had three concerns
1) One reviewer complained about the machine being unstable
2) It was not clear if the machine has a heartbeat monitor. Heart monitor is good to check if you have brought your heartbeat to the rate that is recommended for the cardiovascular exercise.
3) I have a wood laminate floor that squeaks on some spots when I walk across my room; therefore, I was not sure how my floor responds with a person jogging on a heavy treadmill.

Since the majority of reviewers had good experiences with this machine, I went ahead ordered the machine from Amazon.com. One marketer advertised to offer a fan, surround sound speakers, and MP3 player adaptor cable in addition to the treadmill machine. I was tempted to order from the store. It turns out that these are standard features of this model and they all come for free with the machine.

Delivery
Shipping was free for me using Amazon's super-saver delivery feature. The product was delivered to my home in 5 days. The deliveryman called ahead of time and left a message on my answering machine to make sure someone was at home to receive the product. I recommend giving your cell phone so that the delivery man can reach you at anytime. The shipping box is large and heavy. The delivery man put the machine at the final assembly location in my living room, so I did not have to move it around myself.

Assembly
Make sure there is some carpet or rug on the floor while assembling this machine to prevent scratching your floor.
It takes about an hour to fully assemble the machine. Some assembling tasks will require assistance from a second person. I had to ask for my wife's assistance a couple of times. During unpacking, taking the heavy belt/motor assembly out of the box requires two people. Installing the faceplate/electronic assembly to the hand bars was a difficult task for one person because it requires holding the bolt holes aligned while at the same time inserting/tightening the bolt.

The assembly instruction is very clear and the bolts and washers are grouped and packaged in separate bags according to theassembling steps. For example, all bolts and washers to be used in step 2 are packaged inside a bag labeled as #2. There are only 6 parts to be assembled, excluding the bolts and washers. All the tools you need for assembling the machine come with the machine. So, assembling is relatively easy as long as you know how to use an Allen wrench to tighten a bolt.

Horizon T101 Cushion SystemThe platform under the belt has to be lubricated using the provided silicone lubricant. To do this, you have to loosen two bolts in order the belt is loose enough for you to be able squirt the silicone lubricant under belt. The important thing is making sure you count how many turns you turned the bolts to loosen the belt.

After you lubricated the platform, you have to tighten the belt by turning the bolts the same number of turns. I recommend tightening the two bolts alternating between them. For example, if you had loosened the bolts by turning 15 counterclockwise turns, do the tightening 5 clockwise turns at a time, alternating between the left bolt and right bolt so that the belt is tightened evenly.

Using the machine
So far I have used the machine for few days. It had all I need. It is stable. The base flexes in vertical direction to cushion your jogging. This should make it easy on your feet and joints. You see this flexing action if you stand beside the machine and watch the base while someone is jogging.

I am relieved that my floor does not squeak while I am jogging. Note that I have an area carpet under my machine.
The machine has a heart monitor bar. I have to hold the bar in order to get a heartbeat reading.
The machine has 4 wheels to help you move around the machine; however, these are small wheels that are almost useless on a carpet. I have not tried to move the machine on bare floor.

Horizon T101 Treadmill - Wish list of features
I would like to watch TV while exercising. It is difficult to hear the sound from the TV while the treadmill is running at high speed. Increasing the TV volume is an option but it disturbs my other family members. I am wondering if there is a way to stream sound from the TV to a headset via the treadmill or directly to the headset.

Another feature I would like to have is to be able to program a work out preference for each user and save it in treadmill's memory. Ideally, you simply select your individual pre-programmed workout and start. That would have been nice. However, that might be too much to ask for a $600 treadmill.

Summary
It is a good value for the money. It's well-built. I'm satisfied with its features.

Horizon T101 - LED IndicatorI researched the hell out of treadmill before buying this one looking at costco, sams club, amazon, sears, etc and reading product reviews all over the internet. What sold me on this the most was the east of assembly and the sturdyness. My husband is 6'-2 and 300 pounds. The Horizon T101 has a 300-pound deck and we have had no problems.

Also what this offered over other models in the same class was 2-inch more of deck, a beafier engine and longer warrranty...all big pluses when you live in a rural area. A pleasant surprise on this model that wasnt listed was a cooling fan feature with three settings to at least move the air around your face when you get that heart pumping and a little sweat rolling down.

This is a fold up model, but I would like it more if folded up a full 90 degrees, but even at an angle, this has one of the highest angles that I've seen, folding at about at 65-70 degree angle...very much out of the way.

>> So far, so good, By HM <<

After researching more than I planned to and more than I would have liked to, I finally came back to where I started at with the Horizon T101. They happen to sell it at a local (& small) sports store where I felt comfortable with the salespeople who actually wanted to help me & with treadmills that were actually able to be used. (At the large chain stores I went to, no sales people were anywhere around and the safety keys were all removed from the treadmills rendering them useless. Hence, I wasn't exactly thrilled with the prospect of giving them my money.)
